Rekortan M99

Project Overview:

In 2022 Polytan was awarded the contract to install a Rekortan M99 track system, which provided an excellent surface for athletes to train and compete. Due to recent flooding of the site a full surface replacement of the main straight and southern bend was needed, with re-topping of the existing surface for the remainder of the track deemed suitable, providing a cost-effective option for the client.

The first step in the process was to remove the existing synthetic surface of the main straight and southern bend. Polytan used a full depth demolition methodology to remove the existing surface, which involved the removal of all layers of the profile including milling the asphalt. The next step was to reconstruct these areas and match with existing kerb to the outside and new drainage channels on the inside including a new 30mm thick asphalt layer.

To ensure the milled surface met strict level requirements for installation of the new asphalt layer, Polytan used UTS level controls with a micro-drum milling machine to profile the existing asphalt. This ensured all levels were even, and to the correct height and grade, allowing for the installation of the new asphalt layer to be completed seamlessly.

Naturform with assistance from Polytan, removed and constructed the new infield drainage, which is an important component of any athletics track. The infield drainage is responsible for the removal of surface water from the track, which helps to maintain the integrity of the track surface and allows the track to be used quickly following a downpour.

Polytan also replaced some of the existing athletics facilities to enhance the functionality of the athletics facility. Polytan worked closely with UQ Sport to identify their requirements and ensure the new facilities met their needs.

The final step of the project involved the installation of the new Rekortan M99 track system. Polytan used the same product as the previous installation to ensure consistency and quality across the entire track surface.

This project was challenging due to the different surfacing types and the requirement for the seamless installation of the new surface to meet with the existing track surface. Polytan’s experience and expertise in sports surfacing ensured the project was completed successfully.

Polytan has previously collaborated with UQ Sport on other sports surfacing projects, including the installation of new synthetic turf fields at the University of Queensland’s St.Lucia campus in Brisbane, Australia in 2016. Polytan worked closely with UQ Sport throughout this project as well and received great feedback from athletes, students and UQ Sport officials alike.

The Results:

The upgrade works carried out at UQ Sport have provided the facility with a state-of-the-art athletics track that will enhance the training and competitive opportunities for athletes. UQ Sport can now continue to offer the community an outstanding facility that meets the highest standards in sports surfacing.
