Project Overview:

With changes made by the FIH to hockey pitch profiles for elite level hockey venues, the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) wanted to bring the Olympic Hockey Stadium pitch (built for the 2000 Sydney Olympics) in line with the new FIH 2017 Handbook requirements.
Polytan was awarded the specialist contract after a rigorous tender process, particularly in response due to their innovative solution to a pavement upgrade that was required in a short time frame.

The overall project included:
• Pavement redevelopment and new surfacing works using the Poligras Platinum COOLplus system which was installed at the 2016 Rio Olympics and 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
• Upgrading the aging irrigation system by removing the infield sprinkler heads which allowed for greater playability and reduced the time taken to water the pitch prior to and during matches.
• Levelling the base by using a specialised ELayer which combines a washed stone mixed with Polytan’s own polyurethane to create a free-draining pavement and adjusting the height of the perimeter drainage system to achieve the tight profile and tolerance requirements for FIH Global Elite certification.

The Results:

SOPA, Hockey NSW and Hockey Australia were thrilled with the facility which was completed on time and on budget, and can once again host Hockey Pro League events and other major international hockey tournaments due to its re-certification.
