New tracks from Polytan to the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre:
Berlin competition fair for Sydney
The home of Australia’s and NSW’s track and field, Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre (SOPAC) has undergone a significant $2.3 million facelift. The two full sized tracks have now been given new Rekortan synthetic surfaces from Polytan ensuring SOPAC maintains it’s standing as a world-class facility and importantly meets the requirements of IAAF to continue to hold international events.
A new colour scheme was approved, Hertha blue with Light grey. This combination found fame when it was used for the first time in Berlin´s Olympic Stadium and has since met with strong approval worldwide. The Australian Athletics Championships will be held here providing our athletes the best possible preparation competing on a brand new track in final preparation for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The main stadium and warm-up arena are complete with a covered stand for over 5,000 spectators and additional seating for some 9,000 people is provided by grassed banks. The floodlighting was upgraded for both areas, with the main stadium receiving a 7.00 x 6.00 m video screen.
Both tracks received a new base from Polytan between October 2015 and February 2016. The water-impermeable, multi-layered solid synthetic system Rekortan was the surface of choice providing good acceleration and optimum player comfort whilst maintaining high abrasion resistance and excellent suitability for spiked running shoes, all thanks to EPDM granules interspersed in the wear layer. IAAF Class 1 certified track rounds off the high-quality features of this facility
“Since February 2016, athletes in the Competition Arena at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre have been doing battle on the multi-layer synthetic Rekortan M99 surface (Polytan PUR).
