Wellington City Council has been working with the local Sports and Community Group on the development of new facilities, for the community at Alex Moore Park. Stage One of the redevelopment began in September 2013 with the full construction of a new artificial turf field, complete with detailed drainage, concrete bleacher seating, timber boardwalks and retaining walls, which have provided a much needed modern, community sports facility to the park.
The upgrade was awarded to STI NZ, including nearly 10,000m² of APTA’s LigaTurf RS+ 260 COOLplus synthetic surface for the multi-sport field including rugby, football and for the first time rugby league!
Deputy Mayor Justin Lester, who regularly plays football at the park, stated that the installation of the artificial turf was revolutionising sport in the Wellington area. ‘It means sports people – young and old – can get to play all year round, in all weather.’
In addition, the adjacent 2,200 square metre indoor facility will boast a full size gymnasium, and function areas, to cater for a large variety of sporting, recreation and community use.
‘The new surface is great news – those playing sport will now have a total of seven synthetic sports fields in the city to play on that boasts artificial turf,’ says Johnsonville Councillor Paul Eagle.
