Project Overview:
Monash University’s hockey field at their Clayton campus had been a fixture of the university’s sporting precinct for over 15 years. Originally installed as a wet surface requiring constant irrigation, the field had reached the end of its serviceable life and was in need of a major upgrade to meet contemporary performance and sustainability standards. Polytan was engaged to deliver a full redevelopment, with works commencing in September 2024 and completing in December 2024.
The project involved the complete removal of the existing synthetic surface, shock pad, and irrigation system, with a new Poligras H2Oz GT sand-dressed surface installed over an in-situ shock pad layer. Beyond the playing surface itself, player shelters and the scoreboard were replaced, new hockey goals installed, perimeter concrete works completed to improve accessibility, and ancillary infrastructure — including drinking fountains and bin enclosures — upgraded to deliver a comprehensive, modern facility.
The Results:
Despite logistical challenges including limited site access via a shared entranceway and enforced shutdown periods, Polytan strategically sequenced works to protect the critical completion date, ensuring all milestones were met without compromise. The new field is certified to FIH Category 3, delivering elite-level hockey performance in a facility that is built to last — and built for the whole community.
The redevelopment has transformed what was an ageing, resource-intensive field into a modern, future-proof sporting venue for Monash University students, staff, and the wider local community to enjoy for years to come. Critically, the transition away from a wet surface has eliminated ongoing irrigation requirements, delivering meaningful water savings and significantly reducing the facility’s environmental footprint.
