Project Overview:
The Queensland Government awarded Polytan the contract to upgrade the athletics track at the Gold Coast Performance Centre in Runaway Bay, Queensland, enhancing one of the region’s key high-performance sporting facilities.
The venue supports athletes of all levels, from elite competitors and visiting international teams through to school groups and local athletics programs. The redevelopment was designed to deliver a world-class training environment, combining a high-performance synthetic track system with innovative technology to support athlete development.
The project included the construction of a new perimeter concrete kerb to assist with flood mitigation measures and protect the track infrastructure, replacement of the surrounding synthetic grass, resurfacing of the athletics track with Polytan’s Australian-made Rekortan M sandwich synthetic track system, and completion of new line marking.
A key feature of the upgraded facility is the integration of Polytan’s SmarTracks system. Embedded timing chips and sensors within the track capture real-time performance data including split times, speed, acceleration and stride length. This information is automatically recorded and synced to an app, allowing athletes and coaches to analyse performance and tailor training sessions with greater accuracy.

The upgraded Gold Coast Performance Centre athletics track has achieved World Athletics Class 2 Certification, ensuring the facility meets internationally recognised standards for athletics competition.
