Polytan Bali International Disabled Lawn Bowls Open with BSF Asia

Between Wednesday 1st May and Saturday 4th May 2019, the first ever Polytan Bali International Disabled Lawn Bowls BSF Asia event was held in Bali, Indonesia.

It was a HUGE HIT! From singles, doubles to team events, Polytan and BSF Asia were amazed with the athletes outstanding performance.

BSF Asia and Polytan’s collaboration began 5 years ago when Polytan visited Bali for their Annual Agent Conference.  At this conference Polytan donated a Laykold sports surface, lawn bowls green and accessible toilet to the BSF Sports hall after hearing all the incredible work the foundation had been undertaking.

Polytan raised funds to purchase, build and donate 20 basketball wheelchairs for BSF Asia to assist them with their newly established sports programmes.

This allowed BSF Asia to create the BSF wheelchair basketball program, which became a massive success with 90% of the Indonesian Wheelchair Basketball team competing at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta thanks to BSF’s successful programs.

Honoured to make such a major difference to BSF Asia, Polytan will continue to support those living with a disability throughout Asia and highly support getting behind such an incredible organisation like BSF Asia.

While Polytan & APT were in Indonesia for the SportGroup Agent Conference in May this year, we took to resurfacing the under-cover court area with a fresh new coating of Laykold and line marking.

During the SportGroup Agent Conference, staff played against BSF Asia in a wheelchair rugby contest as part of a team building experience.

BSF Asia’s performance was too good when in the second half they took off to claim their victory.

Pleased with their victory and outstanding performance against Polytan’s wheelchair team, BSF were humbled with the presentation of a new SIGNGRASS mat that can be taken to future competitions with BSF Asia and displayed proudly.

That evening, SportGroup welcomed a number of BSF athletes to the Finale Dinner and Awards evening at the Laguna Luxury Collection Resort & Spa.

The Indonesian Wheelchair Rugby Captain and Basketball athlete were kind enough to present to the SportGroup on how sport has changed their lives and transformed their worlds.

With the support of BSF Asia, they now have the opportunity to travel internationally, represent their countries at various championships and enjoy a life that embraces their disability.

To thank BSF Asia for their involvement at our event, Polytan presented BSF Asia with 6 international competition standard lawn bowl sets, and a wonderfully unique painting by Australian Speed Painter Brad Blaze.

As part of the evenings entertainment, Brad Blaze impressed the audience with his creative speed painting, live music and comical antidotes.

All paintings were auctioned off with thousands of dollars of proceeds being donated to BSF Asia.

Image of Paralympic Champion, Christie Dawes on Fearnley Dawes Athletics Centre Track

The Fearnley Dawes Athletics Track now allows disabled athletes to train and compete alongside able bodied athletes every day.

Every time athletes with a disability now enter this facility they will feel a sense of belonging and a place which truly emits a strong sense of equality and community spirit.

As the chosen home training ground by Paralympic Champion’s Kurt Fearnley and Christie Dawes, this new athletics centre is perfect for athletes from grassroots right through to the elite.

As a great new initiative Wheelchair NSW coordinate ‘come and try’ sessions at Newcastle Athletics Field every week, which is ideal for new users wanting to participate in this wheelchair sport.

Providing two years of funding as part of a Gold Level Sponsorship, Polytan has helped support the centre’s future development and use by the local community with further infrastructure and equipment.

Polytan’s vision is to have at least one inclusive athletics track facility installed within each state and territory throughout Australia by the end of 2020.

The Fearnley Dawes Athletics track is only the first of seven Australian athletics facilities, Polytan aim to have installed across the country.

Polytan along with Disability Sport & Recreation are working together on a standardised approach to increase the number of inclusive facilities across Australia, in an attempt to pave the way for future facility designs which empower athletes from all walks of life.

Together we can make a difference in the lives of all athletes, by considering design elements that are more inclusive to enable wheelchair and physically challenged athletes to participate in more activities.

If you are considering a resurface or new facility, feel free to contact the team at Polytan to learn how you can make some very small and cost effective changes, that will make a very large and beneficial impact to the lives of athletes within your community.
