THE NEW EPIC SPORTS HUB IN CHRISTCHURCH, NZ

In 2011 the devastating earthquakes in Christchurch, NZ destroyed the community’s surrounding sporting facilities, but not their hope or determination!

The Christchurch City Council decided they wouldn’t let this natural disaster affect the community’s opportunity to participate in sport. This was when the idea for once central location catering for many different sports including hockey, tennis, athletics was born.

Under the head contract of HEB Construction Ltd, Polytan installed the sports surfaces for 2 FIH Certified hockey pitches, 1 IAAF nine lane athletics track and 12 ITF tennis courts to create the Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub.

These high-quality elite sporting surfaces were manufactured by APT Asia Pacific in Australia at their ISO:9001 approved factory in Dandenong South, VIC.

The facility was awarded with the prestigious Alan Berry Achievement Award at the 2019 SportGroup Agent Conference. This award recognises sporting facilities that encourage those from grassroots to play and develop hockey on a local level.

The new Sports Hub has already held FIH Pro League matches, local hockey matches for the Canterbury Hockey Club and local athletics competition, as well as other local sporting initiatives.

The Cantebury Hockey Club are enjoying the new hockey pitch surfaces:

It’s fantastic to see the hockey community back here and playing together. Reports on the facility have been absolutely awesome and we look forward to using it in its full capacity” – Chris Leslie, Former New Zealand hockey player & High-Performance Manager of Canterbury Hockey Club (CHC).

The Nga Puna Wai Sports Hub brings a new sense of hope and inspiration to the Christchurch community through sport.

IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE MAKES ITS WAY TO THE OLYMPIC STADIUM IN STOCKHOLM

With exposed red handmade bricks and round arches, the listed stadium in Stockholm is an architectural jewel dating back to 1912. At that time, it was built according to the plans of Swedish architect, Torben Grut for the fifth modern Olympic Games. Today, it still serves as a venue for international sports competitions.

The 30th May 2019 was an important date in the events calendar at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium. On this day, the IAAF Diamond League took place for the eighth time in a row at the stadium as part of the Stockholm Bauhaus Athletics meet after Doha on 3 May and Shanghai on 18 May.

It will be the third Diamond League meeting of the 2019 season. The best athletes in the world competed for victory at the Stockholm stadium on a Polytan tartan track.

The IAAF Diamond League will visit this same surface at four other athletics stadiums worldwide for this event.

IAAF DIAMOND LEAGUE IN STOCKHOLM – THE SAME VENUE SINCE 2010

World-class athletics and sports have a long tradition of being held at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium. The DN Galan international sports festival has been held here since 1967.

Due to a change of sponsorship it was renamed to Stockholm Bauhaus Athletics. Since 2010, this venue has been an integral part of the IAAF Diamond League.

Other sporting highlights held in the stadium during 1956 included the Olympic Equestrian Games and between 1956 and 2013 the successful Swedish football club Djurgårdens IF home games. The Stockholm Marathon, which finishes in the Olympic Stadium is also an annual source of excitement.

If you want to enjoy the extraordinary stadium architecture minus the sports, you can also attend concerts by internationally renowned artists.

LISTED ARCHITECTURE IN THE STOCKHOLM STADIUM

Now, Stockholm’s Olympic Stadium is once again in its original condition and features around 14,500 partially covered seats in its historic visitors’ stands. An extra stand was added for the European Athletics Championships in 1958 and was demolished two decades later because its concrete design disturbed the balanced overall style of the venue.

In 1912 this venue held the Stockholm Olympic Games. Architect Torben Grut exclusively selected building materials sourced from Sweden including Väto granite for the foundations and approximately 400,000 hand-crafted bricks from Helsingborg.

THE LIFESPAN OF SYNTHETIC SPORTS SURFACES IN STADIUMS

In order to provide athletes with optimal training and competition conditions, synthetic surfaces for stadiums must be renewed every 10 to 30 years. A professional re-topping by Polytan can expand the life of your track.

The lifespan of a synthetic sports surface depends on the usage intensity and the extent of weathering. Solid synthetic surfaces (also referred to as poured floors) are significantly longer lasting than structural spray-coated surfaces (also known as spray coating or sprayed surfaces).

THE OLYMPIC STADIUM’S RUNNING TRACK: REKORTAN PUR

In the summer of 2014, the old circular track at the Stockholm Olympic Stadium was replaced by a modern Polytan high-speed polyurethane surface. The choice fell on a waterproof Rekortan PUR surface, which has already achieved numerous records and best times worldwide.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THE RUNNING TRACK AT A GLANCE:

  • The ideal combination of an elastic base layer and solid construction
  • High acceleration
  • Energy-enhancing tread elasticity
  • High load capacity and a long lifespan of up to 30 years
  • Interspersed EPDM granules in the top layer make the sports surface ideal for running shoes with spikes
  • Certifiable according to IAAF requirements

Polytan Rekortan PUR surfaces feature a thicker base and thinner top layer. Like all running tracks made by a sports flooring specialist, this high-speed synthetic surface is installed seamlessly on site using the in-situ installation method.

Polytan uses high-quality rubber granules for its surface coatings. Depending on the thickness, shape, quantity and scattering, these granules determine the functional properties of the synthetic surface, such as the energy-enhancing tread elasticity.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about our sports surfaces and provide advice to help you find the right surface for your new training ground. Please do not hesitate to contact us here.

BRICK RED TRACKS WITH BLUE SECTIONS

A few years ago, running tracks were installed exclusively in classic brick red, today the use of other colours has become popular. The most famous example is the blue track at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, which has already found numerous imitators worldwide.

However, in the venerable Olympic Stadium in Stockholm the traditional red tracks have been retained in keeping with the russet brick architecture of the Stockholm stadium itself. The blue sections create highlights, which visually enhance the high, long, triple jump and pole vaulting areas and lend a special touch to the layout.

POLYTAN SYNTHETIC SURFACES IN A HISTORICAL SETTING

The opportunity to install one of our modern athletic running tracks in such a historic and architecturally unique outdoor sports arena as the Stockholm Olympic Stadium is always an extraordinary event and a great honour for us and our employees.

Given that international athletics track and field competitions such as the third Diamond League for the 2019 season are being held at this venue, shows that athletes from around the world enjoy performing at their best on a Polytan athletics track surface.

We wish all athletes the best of luck when competing and performing on our high speed synthetic surface!

SmarTracks for Football Turf

The latest innovative athlete performance tracking technology is expanding into football facilities around the world – all thanks to the hard working team at Polytan.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The SmarTracks timing gates are installed into particular locations within the playing surface.

An athlete can wear a sensor or attach their android device to a belt, worn around the athletes waist while they sprint and manoeuvre across the surface.

As the athlete passes each timing gate their precise performance data is recorded and sent to the SmarTracks App or SmarTracks data software.

More than one athlete can use this SmarTracks system at the same time. Therefore it is the perfect system for schools, sport training facilities, sporting clubs and coaches aiming to optimise their athletes performance.

SMARTRACKS IS TAKING ATHLETES PERFORMANCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL!

Polytan Bali International Disabled Lawn Bowls Open with BSF Asia

Between Wednesday 1st May and Saturday 4th May 2019, the first ever Polytan Bali International Disabled Lawn Bowls BSF Asia event was held in Bali, Indonesia.

It was a HUGE HIT! From singles, doubles to team events, Polytan and BSF Asia were amazed with the athletes outstanding performance.

BSF Asia and Polytan’s collaboration began 5 years ago when Polytan visited Bali for their Annual Agent Conference.  At this conference Polytan donated a Laykold sports surface, lawn bowls green and accessible toilet to the BSF Sports hall after hearing all the incredible work the foundation had been undertaking.

Polytan raised funds to purchase, build and donate 20 basketball wheelchairs for BSF Asia to assist them with their newly established sports programmes.

This allowed BSF Asia to create the BSF wheelchair basketball program, which became a massive success with 90% of the Indonesian Wheelchair Basketball team competing at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta thanks to BSF’s successful programs.

Honoured to make such a major difference to BSF Asia, Polytan will continue to support those living with a disability throughout Asia and highly support getting behind such an incredible organisation like BSF Asia.
